❓ About Setting DPI (FAQ)

This tool changes the DPI (print resolution) metadata of JPG files. Your files are never uploaded to a server; processing happens in your browser.

Does changing DPI affect image sharpness or quality?

No. DPI is only a "print density" value stored in metadata; the pixel data and image quality never change. The image looks identical on screen.

Will I see any difference on screen?

No. Browsers and most screen apps display images based on pixel size; DPI metadata does not affect on-screen rendering. The difference usually only shows up in print/layout software.

Does setting 300 DPI make the file higher resolution?

No. The pixel count (width × height) stays the same; only the "how many dots per inch on paper" value changes. To truly increase resolution you'd need to upscale the image's pixel size, which this tool does not do.

Why don't some programs pick up the new DPI value?

The DPI value is always written into the JFIF (APP0) density bytes; if piexifjs loads, EXIF resolution tags are added as well. Some software only reads EXIF, others only JFIF, so behavior can differ between apps.

Tip: files destined for print usually use 300 DPI; 72–96 DPI is enough for web/screen use. If a print program still ignores the DPI metadata, also check that program's own "document size/DPI" setting.
