FAVICON + BRAND

Convert to ICO: The Right Icon for Favicons and Browser Tabs

Create a favicon for your website. ICO is one of the most compatible icon packages for browser tabs and some platforms.

1) What is ICO and why is it used for favicons?

ICO is a format used mainly for favicons and application icons. An ICO file is like a package that can store multiple sizes (16px, 32px, 48px, etc.) inside one file. Browsers and devices can pick the best size they need.

ICO’s main advantage for favicons is compatibility. Some browsers and older systems still treat ICO as the “default favicon format,” making it a safe standard.

2) How to create a good favicon

Favicons are tiny, so simplicity is your biggest weapon. A complex logo becomes unreadable at small sizes. If possible, use a simple symbol or monogram. Making the source square and leaving breathing space around the edges also improves clarity.

Best practice: create a clean 512×512 square master first, then downscale to build a favicon set. This gives sharper results at every size.

3) Sizes and practical recommendations

Common favicon sizes are 16/32/48px. In some cases, 64px and 128px are useful too. If your icon is too detailed, it will look muddy at 16px—so consider a simplified version for tiny sizes.

4) Testing and cache warning

Favicon changes may not appear instantly because of browser cache. After updating, you may need a hard refresh or cache clearing. Checking on multiple devices (mobile/desktop) is also a good practice.

Tip: Resize to a square and clean icon first, then convert to ICO. This gives the most reliable results. Use incognito or another browser to quickly verify changes.
